I'm a comic creator and illustrator.
I've worked for Titan Comics both writing (Wallace & Gromit, Almost Naked Animals, Adventure Time) and drawing (Dreamworks' Home).
I'm the creator of Lucy the Octopus, a critically acclaimed weekly webcomic on the theme of bullying and ostracisation, and WASP (Webcomic Artist Swap Project), as well as co-creator of fairytale Manga Rosie and Jacinda and bedtime story comic Bang! Crash! Whizz!
I've edited, written and drawn for two volumes of the Tempo Lush Tales comics anthology.
I'm currently developing a graphic novella about balancing parenting and creativity, When Are You Going to Get a Proper Job? due to be published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in 2017.
I am happy to give talks and run workshops on making comics and graphic novels, covering character design, story telling, illustration, lettering, visualising ideas and self-publishing.
Previous workshops have taken place at a variety of venues including…
• The Cartoon Museum
• Discover Children's Centre
• Poole Museum
• Charlton Park Academy
• Barking Learning Centre
• Blackheath High School
• Purley Library
• Walthamstow Library
• Higham Hill Library
• City of London Academy Islington
• Highbury Fields
• Greenwich Theatre
• Cultivate Festival
To give you an idea of the content of one of my workshops, a day long session (5 hours) might go roughly like this...
• Introduction to what a comic creator does and my own work (with accompanying images)
• Warm Up Creative Games / Exercises
• Character Development exercises and introduction (with accompanying slide show)
• Pupils develop and draw their own characters
• Story based games / exercises
• Story writing and planning
• Creating strip using pupil's own characters
Shorter workshops would focus on specific elements of this plan.
Ideally a workshop would have no more than 15 students in it though up to around 30 is still fine (assuming there will be a teacher there to assist).
Talks and assemblies can be for any number of course.
Flip chart or white board with working marker pens, or a calibrated smart board
Ideally a PC/projector to show a PDF images that I would bring on a USB stick
For the participants:
A4 paper, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners and coloured pencils
Copies of worksheets that I would email over in advance
