My current school visits are suitable for either years R, 1, 2 and 3 or for years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and feature my new book for Oxford University Press, Dreaming the Bear or my classic tale of friendship and inclusivity for Walker Books, Drawing Together.
I'm happy to talk to large audiences in all-school assemblies. I use slides and props to talk about why reading and writing are so important, my life as a writer and my books. My workshops draw on the themes of the books to inspire young people to express themselves. My style is approachable and irreverant and I am a passionate advocate for literacy and for young people in general. I'm pretty good at pitching talks to the right level and I actually LIKE being in school with children and teens.
The Dreaming the Bear visit features life-sized models of grizzly bears, grizzly bear claws and thought-provoking worksheets about our relationship to the natural world that link to curriculum in literacy, biology, geography and PSHE. (Suitable for years 5-9)
The Drawing Together visit features colourful slides and lots of time for question and answer. The book's themes of difference, friendship and otherness connect to many school topics and concerns and the activity sheets are linked to curriculum in literacy, art and PSHE. (Suitable for years R-3)
I'm happy to sign books and to organise book delivery. I always donate books to the school library to make sure all the children can read the ending of the book I've introduced.
As a Creative Writing academic with over 17 years in Higher Education, I'm willing to chat with staff about Creative Writing pedagogy and their own writing...many schools like to do this over lunch...and I'll try not to dribble or talk with my mouth full..but no guarantees.

- Recent reviews:
'Mimi Thebo captures an authentic teen voice and the writing throughout the story is hauntingly beautiful, almost dreamlike in places ... I can see adults and many young readers will love this book with its lyrical writing and powerful storyline. For the right type of reader this will undoubtedly be a five star book.' (TheBookbag blog)
'Not for the faint-hearted, this expert rite-of-passage tale - rich with snowshoes, carabiners and bear-awareness classes - stays with you after its logical but harrowing denouement.' (Alexander McCall Smith, The Observer)
'Mimi Thebo's story is a mixture of dreamy scenery, awesome wildlife, and coming-of-age dilemmas.' (The Book Trust)
'Mimi Thebo has created an atmospheric book, with great pace and wonderful characters.' (My Book Corner)

I love to talk to Writer's Groups, Reading Groups and people interested in the themes of my books. I do a great deal of research and use experimental techniques in my writing. After mentoring and teaching many award-winning and best-selling writers, I'm pretty good at motivating writing folks and have a particular interest in narrative voice and the concept of 'finding your voice'. Here's what people said about my appearance at Novelnights in Bristol:
“Sheer magic” and “‘I’m rushing home to my screen right now.”
“I can’t afford to do the Creative Writing MA and I need to work full time. Tonight Novel Nights gave me a MA experience. I’ve been inspired.”
“I’m scared to show my writing to anyone. After tonight I’m going to share and send out my stories.”
“I’m going to send out my stories to magazines. I feel better about my writing.”
“Mimi was brilliant. I have been so inspired to get on with my novel using her suggestions and advice.”
Also, ask me about my Inspirational Speaking...I have quite a story to tell.
