Testimonials

'The children loved listening to Ally and most certainly got a lot out of it! ... A brilliant visit, and really well pitched to the age groups involved.'

Ruth Oliver, Class Teacher and Humanities Subject Leader, Sunnyhill Primary School, Streatham, London

'Ally engaged and enthused the children, who were enthralled with her presentation and were inspired to create their own stories about the Gunpowder Plot. They especially loved all the gory details about what happened to Guy Fawkes after he was captured!'

Jo Clarke, Library Manager, Whitchurch C of E School, Hampshire

'Ally gave an excellent talk on Black Powder and the inspiration behind her story and the children really enjoyed the chance to meet her afterwards at the book signing. They will remember her visit for years to come.'

Jeff Doak, School Librarian, Tollgate Community Junior School, Eastbourne

About me

I am a professional communicator and event organiser with an MA in Writing for Children and experience of presenting both to children and adults. I can offer the following:

For children

An interactive 45 minute to one hour assembly or large group presentation, suitable for Key Stage 2 pupils (Yrs 4, 5 & 6) and Key Stage 3 pupils (Yrs 7 & 8). This includes the following elements:

  • a short talk about me and how I became a writer
  • an introduction about the Gunpowder Plot framed in the context of it being a great story
  • a bit about my book, Black Powder, and the inspiration behind it - places, characters, and a brief intro to the story followed by
  • a reading
  • 'From fact to fiction' - the role of research in writing historical fiction and some of the fun and unusual things I've found out along the way
  • An interactive 'build a spy' session
  • Q&A

I also offer workshops for smaller groups/individual classes lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Topics include:

  • 'What if?' story-building workshops
  • Creating colourful characters (heroes/villains/more on spies)
  • How a writer works - where ideas come from; writing methods; how a book gets published; other things a writer does besides writing.

I am also very open to tailoring workshops on other topics to suit teachers' needs.

For college students and adults

I offer talks on creative writing for children and on how to get published using my own journey to publication as an example.

Fees and travel

My fees are at the lower end of the Society of Author's recommended rates.  I am willing to travel anywhere that is accessible by train and am also prepared to travel overseas, though will need to claim travel expenses and for any overnight stays which might be necessary.

I am a member of the Society of Authors and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
