Details

I have run numerous workshops in primary schools, libraries and at literature festivals. My published books are suitable for early years and key stage one however I have worked across all years and adapt my workshops accordingly.

Prior to publishing my first children's book I was a university lecturer in illustration.

I live and work in our new build wooden house in the middle of London's East End.

Mainly I have done workshops in London but I am willing to travel if a fee can take into account travelling expenses or an arrangement to buy a quantity of my new Clive books to accompany the workshops can be made.

I am passionate about the power of creative learning, as a dyslexic myself and with 2 out of my 3 children also diagonsed with dyslexia, I greatly believe that creative workshops are invaluable to a child's self esteem.

The book that I wrote when I was six and half called "Carlo the Giraffe who could not read." was the basis for my first ever published book.

Make your own picture book character workshop.

My sessions are approximately 1 hour long and I can fit up to 5 sessions in a school day.

A typical sessions starts with a general introduction into what an author/ illustrator is, reading some books, drawing and showing examples of  different picture book characters, moving onto a hands on workshop where children create their own picture book character. These can then be used as an inspiration for creative writing and picture book making.

I have previously made individual and class books in workshops.

Sessions end with a celebration of the children's work.

I provide print outs and collage material for the workshops and bring a selection of art materials with me.

I hope that my workshops show children, that even if they are struggling with spelling or learning to read, it does not need to be barrier to their creativity.

A selection of Testimonials

"Jessica Spanyol has run workshops in several of the schools I have worked in. She has a most engaging manner with very young children. Her workshops are inspirational, making children view themselves as authors and illustrators. The work she plans is creative and accessible for children of all abilities.

Children often talk about how much they have enjoyed the sessions afterwards. I cannot recommend this author highly enough, especially for those looking to promote literacy in the early years."

 Flo Katesmark- Early years teacher

'We've worked with Jessica for several years now and she never fails to deliver stimulating and fun illustration based story workshops which please both children and parents alike.  She has a gentle, patient style which small children respond well to and they find her pictures accessible and absorbing.'        Penny Wrout - Landsky Arts  and organiser of Town hall Tales -  Shoreditch Literature Festival.

"Really engaging workshop for Wotton-under-Edge Arts Centre literature festival led by Jessica Spanyol! The children loved it!"  Dr Debby Watson

To be a successful workshop leader, you need to be inspiring, approachable and flexible.  Jess embodies all of these qualities and more.”     Amy Griffiths- Education Liaison - Childs play publishers.
