A little of what they said ...

What a wonderful two days! The children really loved your talks and so did I. I hope you can be persuaded to return to Inverclyde next year.

Sandra Macdougall - Inverclyde Educational Services

Hello Michael

The kids are absolutely mad about your books. I am busy collecting titles to order...

Staff and school administration found you terrific, also the response from the year 5 and 6 parents was amazing. Looks like the kids could not stop telling about all the new stories they have heard of...

Information about my events ...

When I do a school visit I usually work non-stop from the start to the finish of the day with any 'between-session' time taken up with me selling and signing my books and talking to pupils individually.
Examples of my themes - which are very flexible and audience driven:
For the younger children (Reception and Infants): I tell and draw pictures from my story Little Fred Riding Hood (winner of the Independent Scholastic Story of the Year Award), my picture story Leo and Earl (published by Oxford University Press Spring 2004), my Airmail From series, my books from the series Pickle Hill Primary School i.e. Mr Megamouth's Shark Lessons, Mr Blood's Body Lesson and Mrs Parrot's Rainforest Lessons and Captain Codswallop and the Flying Kipper - and of course ... Johnny Catbiscuit!
For the older children 8 upwards:
History: Horribly Famous: Tutankhamun and his Tombful of Treasure - Horribly Famous : Pirates and Their Caribbean Capers
Food: How to Drink from a Frog : A fabulous feast of flavoursome food facts, tasty tidbits and delicious data; stories about nosh to make you go Gosh! and info' about chow to make you yell Wow!
Art : I base this one on my book Awful Art, beginning with my story 'How Art Got Off A To A Terrifying Start' set in a French cave 15,000 years ago and enhanced by silly voices, cartoons, some undignified capering, an authentic charred mammoth rib and protracted and intense audience / author brainstorming on the best way to render huge hairy prehistoric elephants legless (i.e. trunk and incapable) then moving on to sharing the thrilling experience of the four French boys who lost 'zere leetle durg' but discovered 'zee grettest hart treshure in ze ole wurld'.
Horror and Ghosts: Kicks off with discussion of reasons for my choice of the 'top' 10 for my Top Ten Horror and Top Ten Ghost stories then some fascinating facts about horror writers and their subjects e.g. Mary Shelley’s alleged predilection for maggoty meat, her amazing monstrous dream, HP Lovecraft's upbringing as a girl, his utterly terrifying creations etc, then going onto fears irrational and rational e.g. arachybutyropbobia, pantophobia, bogyphobia etc etc followed by some little known facts and anecdotes about vampires and finishing up with readings from The Invasion of the Sausage Snatchers', Nightmare on Eck Street, and Fall of the House of Blodvat books which make up my 'Vampire Vigilantes'fiction series.
And of course ... Johnny Catbiscuit!
I also do talks about the Internet and WWW, music, architecture, pirates, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Elvis Presley, the Battle of Agincourt, the daily life of a Maasai boy, driving Formula One racing cars, flying helicopters ( come to think of it, what other sort are there?), Norse mythology etc etc ... i.e. all things I've written about and which inspire, intrigue and animate me .. which are one and the same.

More what they said:

Dear Michael
Just a quick message to thank you for helping my son rediscover reading. He is at Middle Street School Brighton and after your work there he never seems to stop reading. I am trying to get through Agincourt but he keeps taking it back to read again, and again.

Dear Michael Cox
All of the children (and staff) talked about your workshops for several days. “I liked Michael Cox because he was funny and told us stories,” was the most common comment. Thank you once again for your hard work and for providing such enjoyable and inspirational workshops to motivate children’s reading.
A. Smith - Gunthorpe Church of England Primary School
