I  can think of nothing more exciting than exploring a new country with the different tastes, smells, sights, languages and customs that make it so interesting, and the similarities between people that make it so reassuring.

My stories are set in the Arab World and Africa where I have lived and worked as a teacher and journalist and I try to bring a bit of this other culture into the classroom. Using sound and music, food, language and writing for example, I try to introduce children to another world, which is different to and yet the same as their own.

I also aim to enthuse children about writing, books and their own creative abilities through exchanging ideas and activities, which will hopefully spark off their imaginations and show them that they too can write and illustrate.

With Reception classes, I use Can you hear the sea? which is set in Ghana as a base for further activities that can include building a sound picture, listening games  or colouring in work using illustrations from the book.

With KS1 classes, I look at the various stages of a picture book from its initial draft, through the editing process to the finished product. After 'spot the difference', we discuss reasons for changes and whether they work and then go on to develop a story or piece of artwork of their own.

With KS2 classes, I look at book development and use Sandstorm, which is a time slip novel set in ancient and modern Egypt, to look at story elements such as plot, characters and background, before helping students develop their own ideas.

These are an outline of ideas. I am happy to fit in with specific requirements.

My work is best suited for reception, KS1, KS2 and KS 1+2 and I prefer to work with one class at a time

My rates are in line with those recommended by the Society of Authors
