 ‘Making reading and writing cool'

Bio:

Dan Freedman grew up thinking he hated reading. His only goal was to be a professional footballer.

That didn’t happen.

But he went on to be top football journalist and editor, personally interviewing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Lionel Messi and Sir Alex Ferguson.

As The FA’s Editor, he travelled to two World Cups with the England Team, having unparalleled access to the inner workings of the game at the very highest level.

He used his passion and knowledge of football to create The Jamie Johnson series of novels, which follow one boy’s dream of becoming the greatest player on earth. He calls them ‘the kind of books that I would have wanted to have read growing up.’ There are eight books in the series with over half a million sales to date. The books are currently being adapted for TV by the BBC.

When not writing, Dan delivers talks and workshops all over the world. At the last count, he had visited over 1,500 schools, meeting his readers and inspiring them to go for their goals. He takes a particular interest in encouraging reluctant readers to pick up a book. And he still plays football whenever he can.

The Big Talk

Get Dan to deliver an inspirational talk to a large group. He will tell them about his journey from being a football fanatic at school (just like so many of the pupils) all the way through to working with the England Team and becoming a football author.

It is a fun and inter-active session, for both boys and girls, using kids’ passion for sport to engage them in reading, writing and thinking about their future career paths.

Subjects covered are:

-          How his love for football inspired him to enjoy reading

-          What it’s like working in football

-          How to interview international stars

A DVD of Dan’s interviews with Beckham, Rooney etc

-          How to write a creative story

-          What goes into getting a book published

-         Why he loves being an author

-          A reading from a book in the Jamie Johnson series

-          Lots of questions! (Including prizes for the best ones)

-         Free Book signing

Also Available: Football Writing Workshop

It is possible to do a football writing workshop with a smaller group after Dan's talk.

Dan will work with a class to help stimulate their creative writing. Dan will read an excerpt from one of his books and stop at a cliff-hanger moment…The students are then invited to write what happens next, with Dan giving them tips, hints and encouragement as they write, explaining the challenges that creative writing presents and some of the solutions that he has found.

Students then read out to each other the endings that they have come up with and they discuss what they liked about one another’s work.

It is a hugely enjoyable session which shows the pupils that they really do have the ability to write creatively and can have fun doing so. Teachers are often amazed at certain pupils' ability to produce a significant amount of writing when channelled in this way.

A workshop lasts between 60-90 minutes.

Finally, some comments about Dan and his books:

Comments

‘The books are an inspiring read for all football fans’ – Gary Lineker

'You'll read this and want to get out there and play' - Steven Gerrard

‘Dan was an inspiration to our boys - encouraging them to produce creative writing beyond their usual standards. His books have also inspired some of the students to reading both wider and more frequently.’ Barbara Band, Emmbook School

‘For mixed ability kids he was so appropriate. Very patient with their questions. He was brilliant. I would love to hear him again.’ David Cummings, Rainham Girls School

‘Seeing Tom and Sami with their noses glued to a book in quiet reading is a sight I never thought I would see.’ Sue Hickman, St Paul’s Cray Primary School

‘He really did inspire the children.  The fact that he is so knowledgeable about football makes his books exciting and proves to the boys that they can be connected to football through words as well as actions.’ Dawn Finch, Wheatfields School

‘It has been a pleasure to see the children walking around the school carrying your books. This, I am sure, is due to them being able to associate a real-life author with an actual novel.’ Victoria Nemeth, Highgate Junior School

‘The teachers were extremely impressed with your visit and how you motivated the children to write – apparently they have never worked so hard on a piece of writing. So thank you because you really made an impact on our children’ Amanda Parker, Raynehurst Primary School

‘The talk was very motivational for our students. It will be a day they will remember for ever.’ Penny Didcock, Icknield Community College

'It was a pleasure to see that despite the bell signalling the end of the day, the students were still eager to stay and ask you more questions.' Mr G Sammons, Headteacher, Crookhorn College of Technology
