“Guy Parker-Rees is one of the most exciting... artists in the children’s book world.”

The Rough Guide to Children’s Books.

I like to bring the act of making a picture book to life and to get children excited about books. It's a fun, behind the scenes look at how an author and illustrator goes about making a picture book. So I talk a bit about how I work as an illustrator and as an author, how I come up with ideas for characters or how I develop characters from another author's text. I  show the stages of the process of picture book illustration.

There's lots of participation along the way as the children help me draw a character or two on large bits of paper. I might also show how I illustrate different feelings (the School can keep all of these).
Enthused and inspired, the children then make up their own picture book characters.

I also read a story- again, often with much participation, acting out ...and dancing!
If the children have been imaginative enough, my friend Gerald the Giraffe just might come out for a rather spectacular dance!

I mainly do my workshops with Key Stage 1, but also run workshops with KS2.

The talks last about 45-60 mins and I like to have up to about 60 children at each session. I would usually do about three or four sessions in the day. I can do a powerpoint presentation for larger groups.

The structure of the day and the sessions is very flexible and I'm happy to work around any suggestions, themes or ideas you may have.

I charge the Society of Authors suggested rates of £400 for a full day (up to four sessions) and £300 for a half day plus VAT + travel expenses.
I am based in Brighton.

I have illustrated over sixty books, including:
Giraffes Can't Dance (isbn:978-1841215655)
Author Giles Andreae. This was the first book in which I found a way of illustrating that I was really happy with. It's such a wonderfully life-affirming story, I'm very pleased it's gone on to be such a bestseller.
