Details

I am a children's author based on the Worcestershire/Warwickshire border.

As a former classroom teacher I love to go 'back' into schools and would welcome visits in my area (Worcs/Warks/Glos/Oxon). Content of workshops depends upon age, but for younger children (Reception & KS1) I can read my picture books and bring along activities such as colouring sheets/craft activities/word puzzles/rhyming games/poetry activities. For older children (KS2) I can talk about writing picture books, working with rhyme and metre and the craft of writing in general with such topics as dialogue, characterisation, show not tell, the importance of opening lines etc. There are plenty of creative exercises for the children to try - not just about picture books!

I also love to chat about my favourite stories and read extracts from a variety of books. I try to instil my enthusiasm for books in the children and give a taste of the fun and enjoyment both writing and reading can give.

I trained and worked as a primary teacher, ended up as Head of Music in two secondary schools in Devon and now teach instrumental music privately. This has given me good experience of working with all ages.

Private teaching has also allowed me to spend more time enjoying my favourite hobby - scribbling - and the excitement of seeing my first picture book published. Four more have since appeared on bookshelves! I am currently working on a completely different style of picture book plus an adventure story for readers of 8+.

All workshops are organised in consultation with teachers - I'm happy to fit any needs. I can also bring along books for pupils to purchase and have signed.

Expenses are always requested, but level of fees is negotiable.

After a visit to Cleeve Prior School, Head Teacher Sarah Newbury said, 'It was a lovely day and Julie was very well received by the children. For them to see an author in the flesh was very worthwhile.'

Longney School in Gloucestershire said, 'Thank you so much for this afternoon, the children had a fantastic time....you clearly love spending time with them.'

Following sessions in schools as part of Stratford-upon-Avon's Literary Festival, 7 year old Eleanor said, 'We loved designing and making plates of food for the competition. The story we did together was great fun too!'

After an activities and signing session in Stratford-upon-Avon, Waterstone's staff member Jenn Carson said, 'We held an event which was a storming success. The children loved it and parents were full of praise... We look forward to having her in store for her second instalment.'

I am happy to deliver story sessions in libraries.
