Author, alien, public speaker, ex-teacher, lover of long words.
I was an English and Music teacher before almost losing my sense of humour (and mind) and after a number of children’s musicals I wrote were published, decided I needed to devote myself to writing. I became a full-time television scriptwriter for children, working on the award winning children’s programme Kideo, entered a nationwide scriptwriting competition and was selected to be on the writing team of Generations, a popular South African soap. I also worked as an advertising copywriter, wrote radio ads and jingles, industry specific educational textbooks and readers for illiterate and semi-literate adults, corporate video scripts, CD-ROM programmes for the Independent Electoral Commission before the first democratic elections in South Africa...anything to keep the wolf from the door.
I’m constantly writing, books and TV scripts. In 2000 I embarked on a new journey, crossing the galaxy to settle on a new planet or as some like to call it 'Immigration', and am now a proud possessor of a maroon Intergalactic Wayfarer Permit and have come to love the aliens I mix with daily.
Since becoming a published author I have been visiting schools in the Bristol and Gloucestershire area and as far afield as Stevenage to talk about writing and to run workshops. I talk about what it’s like being an ‘alien’ and explain how this influenced my sci-fi trilogy Blue Dust: Forbidden, Destiny and Insurrection, as it was born out of my own struggles as an immigrant.
I spend time getting the children to do a bit of lateral thinking and talk about and share some of my favourite long words. ‘What words?’, I hear you ask? Floccinaucinihilipilification – is always a hit. I also give them tips about finding names for characters, plotting their novel or story and I often role play a story that we create as we go along.
Following a talk at one of my local libraries, the Yate Library Teen Readers Group said :
“The best long words ever”,
“it has inspired me to become a writer”,
“she drawed me in with her reading and jokes”.
Their librarian said: “I just wanted to say a great big “Thank You” for Thursday evening. You held the young people in the palm of your hand for the longest time and as you probably well know that is no mean feat when dealing with teenagers. I always sit out the back to watch to see when a break is needed due to fidgeting but as you know they were enthralled and even I forgot about a break.”

I’m thoroughly enjoying being back in the classroom in a different capacity. I also speak about my life growing up in apartheid South Africa, to Women’s Institutes, local history clubs, mother’s groups, church societies and anyone else that wants me. I’ve been interviewed on local radio and am the ‘Voice of South Africa’ at the Commonwealth and Empire Museum’ in Bristol.
In 2012 I was delighted to be offered a four book publishing deal with Ghostly Publishing and my first book Blue Dust : Forbidden was released in November 2012 and was nominated for the Costa Book Awards. The sequel, Blue Dust : Destiny was released in Nov 2013 with the final book in the series Blue Dust: Insurrection, released in Nov 2014. Sadly, Ghostly Publishing is now nothing more than a ghost itself, but I'm thrilled to be part of GLUE, a new indie publisher with a difference.
Drippy Face, a children's fantasy, was released in Nov 2014 and has been picked up by Nickelodeon and CBBC for possible film/TV adaptation, very exciting. I was commissioned to write a series of books to accompany foam ‘ride-on’ animals that are used in children’s hospices across the UK. I’m happy to discuss any kind of commission or ghostwriting.
I’m willing to travel if expenses are covered. I do charge for talks and workshops and am always willing to negotiate. Please contact me if you’re interested.
