Hannah Shaw is a children's author and illustrator. She has a passion for character creation, drawing and fun story ideas. She loves to share her enthusiasm of books with children and adults of all ages.

Her own picture books include Bear on a Bike, the award winning Evil Weasel, Erroll a nutty squirrel tale and a cheeky raccoon story about manners and morals - School for Bandits.

Hannah illustrates picture books for other authors. Look out for Gareth Edward's badger in The Disgusting Sandwich, five books by Sean Taylor - including The Grizzly Bear with the Frizzly Hair and Who Ate Auntie Iris and Anna McQuinn's The Sleep Sheep.

Hannah also writes and illustrates fiction books for young readers. Her newest, illustrated series The Scruffs and The Scruffs Showtime is great for reluctant readers who love silly animal tales. Stan Stinky- Sewer Hero is a funny, pic-fic story about a surfing young sewer rat, the sequel Stan Stinky vs the Sewer Pirates is a sleuth mystery.

Other young fiction illustrated by Hannah includes the popular re-issued Sophie series by Dick King-Smith, Casper Candlewacks by Ivan Brett and the prize winning Great Hamster Massacre stories by Katie Davies. Hannah has also worked on special dyslexic and young reader fiction books for Julia Donaldson The Snake who came to Stay and Mr Birdsnest and the House Next Door.

EVENTS

“IT IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH HANNAH IN SCHOOL. HER WORKSHOPS ARE INSPIRING AND EXCITING, OFFERING BOTH PRACTICAL WRITING AND ILLUSTRATION ADVICE FOR PUPILS AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THE WORLD OF PUBLISHING.”

Hannah lives in Gloucestershire and will travel to events up to 2 hrs travel away (Midlands, South Wales, South West and London) for a day visits.

Events further afield are on special request. Skype talks and interactive sessions are an option please enquire via email to discuss what is possible.

Hannah's usual primary school or library workshop event:

1 hour session (up to 5 in a day): 30 mins front-led presentation - live drawing and selected stories/ readings, followed by 10 mins of Q&A. The final 20 mins is working with the children on a character creation workshop. This workshop can then be continued in class or extended into a longer session.

A half day session or a full day session with one group involves further exploration into the characters they have invented, either working in pairs to a create story and illustrating a mini picture book and cover for their story.  This longer session generally suits older KS1 children and KS2 - KS3 (or ages 8-14). The aim is to get everyone creatively collaborating to produce illustrated stories they can be proud of.

For festivals or non-educational events and parties: Hannah will usually do a themed workshop around a new book. This can include fun craft activities, worksheets, games and stories.

For secondary schools, colleges and adult workshops: A session tailored to suit the age / ability of the audience. This can range from a shorter talk and presentation to a whole day workshop exploring the finer details of making a picture book. Explore processes that lead to publication, get advice on writing styles and illustration techniques. Hannah can also take part in set projects, she has experience of teaching illustration up to degree level.

The main aim of a visit is to provide insight, entertainment and encourage imaginative, creative drawing and writing.

A signing is the perfect way to end a visit. It is up to the venue to organise and promote the signing and for them to order in the appropriate books. Hannah can provide images for promotional purposes, she can also recommend a book selling service to purchase books at discount on a sale or return basis. In some cases Hannah can bring books to sign herself but will need to know in advance.
