I write both fiction (stories, novels) and non-fiction (memoir, investigative journalism). My most recent book is my memoir WHAT LANGUAGE DO I DREAM IN? (Virago), in which I explore the relationship between my multicultural family history and my own identity. The themes of identity, family history and life in exile are also present in my fiction. In Foreign Brides (stories), I write about women who are married to men in countries that are not their own. In The Nose (a novel), a young American expat editor in London becomes entangled in her mother's Central European history, with tragic-comic consequences.
