About the author
I spend my time mostly between England and Spain but also often travel to distant corners of the world to find time to clear my mind and work on picture book ideas. I always make sure I'm in the UK for world book day when I have most of my school visits. I speak English, French and Spanish and I'm quite good at fixing-up old things such as wooden boats and stone houses.

I studied Illustration at Falmouth college of Arts and my first book 'Marvin wanted MORE!' is a winner of the Macmillan Prize for children's book illustrations. My Marvin books are now sold around the world in over 10 different languages.

Recently I was happy to learn that little Prince George's favourite book is Marvin Wanted More! and he even named his pet hamster Marvin after it!  :)

Praise for Marvin the sheep!

'Theobald makes a promising debut here. Working in stylized shapes and lines and using a bright, limited palette, he creates ostensibly serene, deadpan renderings that make Marvin's creature-feature metamorphosis all the funnier. Theobald understands his audience's taste for expulsive humor. ("Baaaaaa!" says Marvin, as he spews the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and other landmarks) to restore the natural order'
Publishers Weekly

'My favorite book of the year...A quirky tale with gorgeously humorous illustrations, this is a marvelous first book. Joseph Theobalds simple and bold illustrations enhance this hilarious picture book.'
Waterstone's Books Quarterly

'A delightful choice for storytimes, with enough hilarity to pull in older children'.
Schools Library Journal

'A masterpiece... a great first book from a very talented newcomer'
Jane Simmons, creator of Come on, Daisy

School Visit Reviews

Feedback from K. Woodmore: Ranvilles Infant school. March 2020

Joseph was absolutely wonderful with the children. He was very interesting to listen to and the children absolutely loved his talk and reading of his stories. They loved that he was an illustrator too and the workshop was amazing. The children all created wonderful drawings of Marvin and Mollie which they were very proud of and carried on completing in the classroom. Thank you Joseph, we hope you will be able to come back again.
Joseph Theobald Author Visit to Tettenhall College 3rd October 2012
We were lucky enough to have a visit from the Marvin and Molly creator, Joseph Theobald as part of our Book themed week. The pupils have loved listening to Marvin Wants More and Marvin Gets Mad as part of their storytimes over the years and so were very excited to actually meet the author and illustrator.
Joseph was really lovely with the children and he read stories, chatted and gave illustration lessons to our pupils from Nursery to Year 6. Regardless of age the pupils were enthralled by the sessions. A few members of staff commented that it was nice to have an author who aimed his talk at the right levelsfor Early Years and Keystage 1 & 2.
Joseph also put a lot of work into all of the books he signed for the pupils. He drew a little picture of Marvin in each of the books before dedicating them and signing them. It was much appreciated. In fact all of the little touches that Jospeh did before, during and after the visit were really thoughtful. The advance orders for the books and the little Molly and Marvin postcards and magnets he left for the children just added that extra bit of magic.
I would heartily recommend a visit from Joseph, he was entertaining and laid back and certainly not a demanding diva (as some authors/illustrators have been on visits!). I certainly love my new skill of being able to draw Marvin the sheep and I know the children do too!

Marvin and Molly

In this funny tale about friendship and not growing up too soon, Joseph Theobald answers the question most asked by his readers - Are Marvin and Molly married??

Marvin wanted MORE!

'A delightful choice for storytimes, with enough hilarity to pull in older children'. -Schools Library Journal

Marvin gets MAD!

A very funny book that captures the red mist which seems to envelop children - turning your normally adorable child into a screaming monster.

Arthur's Fantastic Party

Arthur the donkey is having a party but he wants it to be fantastic. So fantastic, that only fantastic guests can come! But when none of his friends qualify to go on the guest list, he changes his mind and everyone has lots of fun.
