Hello! I write stories, sketches and poems incorporating maths and science ideas for age 4-11+ children. Between them the pieces cover all aspects of the primary maths and science curriculum. I have presented/performed my work in schools around England and Wales. I have also given talks about my work to teachers in Northern Ireland and have also visited a primary school on a British Army base in Germany (Bergen-Belsen) and international schools in France, Egypt, Germany and Belgium.
I also give creative writing workshops based on the zany ideas from my book "Crazy Ideas", which uses short, humourous, punchy pieces to inspire children to write. As the pieces are not off-puttingly long the children see that they could write similar pieces, such as "excuses for not doing homework" or "crazy superheroes", allowing them to develop confidence and enjoyment from their own creative writing. For two years I was Writer in Residence for South Leeds Action Zone, working in five inner-city Leeds schools promoting and developing the children's creative writing.
I have also visited schools along with fellow author Conrad Burdekin in the guise of a "Wakefield Writing Warrior". Con takes on the persona of the evil "No-Plot Person" (boo!) intending to rob the children of their imagination. As Story Man (hurray!) I get the children to help me re-write the horrible stories, "The Boring Tortoise" and "The Very Nice Day" that No-Plot Person (double boo!) inflicts on them.
I am currently based in West Yorkshire but am willing to travel anywhere in the UK and also abroad. My usual fee is £350 per day plus reasonable travel expenses. The usual fee for the Wakefield Writing Warriors is £480 plus expenses - but in both cases I/we are willing to haggle for a good cause! (Particularly for longer bookings.)
I am a member of The Society of Authors, NAWE (National Association of Writers in Education.) nd the SAS (Scattered Authors Society!) Some of my stories are available on www.cutalongstory.com and www.counton.org
Early versions of my maths stories and poems can be seen on the DfES founded web-site www.counton.org ("Explorer" section.) I have also written non-fiction science and maths books for an international publisher.
