Hello! My name is Ann Scott and I am the editor, publicist and publisher for Patrick George's books. We are most well known for our series of books with acetate pages which, when turned, transform the image on the page underneath. We work as a team although it is primarily me who visits schools, bookshops and libraries to introduce and read our books and give workshops as Patrick is rather shy! I have been giving workshops since 2014 and was delighted to appear at the Imagine Festival at London's Southbank and the Edinburgh Children's Book Festival. Patrick George and I have also travelled to France and Germany to give workshops.
We live on the Kent coast with our three teenage children, three-legged rescue dog, Oscar, and Cocoa our cat. We work from a studio in our house about 5 minutes walk from the sea and start the day with a walk along the beach with Oscar. We started designing and publishing in 2009, inspired following our move out of London and a desire for a fresh start.
The Animal Rescue workshop is about empowering, participation, creating and a little bit of magic! I am happy to visit groups of KS1 and KS2 and will adapt the content depending on the audience. We talk about our pets and wild animals, our favourite animals, respect for animals and natural habitats. We read the book and make some noise rescuing the animals with the turn of each page and then the children draw and/or colour and make large 75mm badges to take home with them. (Materials provided). We also explore the magic transformation page feature.
I would recommend groups of 20 - 30 children maximum per workshop because making the badges can take some time but I can provide some mix and match activities for the children so that no one is left idle while they wait!
I am happy to give a talk about becoming an author/publisher and our books upon request.
Some feedback from teachers and children:
“Thank you so much! The children were buzzing afterwards”
(Priory Infant School, Ramsgate)
“Incredibly awesome” “Fab-u-lous” “Made my Friday” (Pupils from Christchurch Junior school, Ramsgate)
We teamed up with the Born Free Foundation when we published this book and we donate a percentage of our profits to them. This is what Will Travers, OBE, President said about the book
"We can only imagine what it is like to be a tiger, an elephant, a crocodile or a turtle. But we can understand why we need to rescue wild animals in need and protect them. This is what makes us human. This book should be the start of every child's journey towards a more compassionate future".
Animal Rescue was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Award 2016, shortlisted for Best British Book Design and Highly Commended by Junior Parenting magazine. It was also shortlisted in Germany for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis.
Animal Rescue has been translated into 14 different languages. Patrick George and I will consider all requests to give a workshop abroad.
Patrick George has designed and illustrated 18 books since 2009, 7 of which are with acetates. Many of the titles are available in up to 18 different languages. All our books are non-fiction, light-hearted and educational.
