I'm a children's writer, poet and workshop leader based in north London. My passion is for getting children as excited about reading and writing as I am. Stories hold immense power to change and heal us; through developing children's understanding of stories we can help them become more empathetic, imaginative and resilient.
I was on the writing team who developed and wrote My Golden Ticket, the story of a child's trip around Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. It's a personalised book in which the story itself is different depending on the name of the child you buy it for. Since it's a personalised book, it's slightly different from most other children's books; it's extra-exciting for a child to open a book that's all about THEM (and the fact that it's personalised also means you can only buy it from Wonderbly's website, not from ordinary bookshops!).
The most fun part of writing My Golden Ticket was getting the chance to add extra facets to the world Roald Dahl created so brilliantly in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I and the rest of the team invented new rooms for the factory and new sweets that Willy Wonka produces there. We were all dreaming about chocolates and sweets for months!
I also write poetry for children and adults.
Some of my workshops are:
- The 'Hairy Toe' Spooky Poetry Workshop
- The Small and Beautiful Haiku
- What If Your Dog Could Talk?
- Mysterious Maps
- The Yucky Stuff Workshop - How To Make Your Writing As Yucky As Possible
I try to put an unusual twist on all my creative writing workshops - I love getting children’s imaginations firing, enthusing them about books and teaching them how to create characters, put together stories and experiment with language.
As well as my work for Wonderbly, I've written for fiction packager Working Partners, as well as doing fun projects like writing the entire website of a dog-walking company from the point of view of a dog! If you want to read the words of a very silly dog, look here. Before I started writing for children I was a reporter on a local newspaper, and I can run sessions on journalism for kids too.
Get in touch if you have a writing or editing project you think might be suitable for me, or if you're interested in having me run a workshop.
