I did my formal journalistic training on the Watford Observer and went to the journalism school at Harlow College in Essex in the UK – the same one attended by Piers Morgan.
I worked for London News Service at the same time as Anne Robinson and her then husband-to-be John Penrose.
I was Chief Reporter on the Lea Valley Mercury in Hertfordshire.
I then freelanced for two years alongside biographer, journalist and broadcaster, Michael Freedland.
Specialising in local government I moved into a career in local government public relations.
My first job was as press officer and then communications and marketing officer for the London Borough of Haringey. I was there at the time of the Broadwater Farm riots and the killing of PC Blakelock. It was also the time of the winter of discontent. During my tenure I also witnessed the burning down of a large section of Alexandra Palace – the birthplace of television and owned by the council and dealt with international media coverage.
Notable politicians on the council were the late Bernie Grant and the now leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn.
I then went to the London Borough of Wandsworth going from what the media loved to call the ‘loony left’ to Margaret Thatcher’s ‘flagship’ Tory local council.
Then followed a spell in leafy Surrey working as Head of Communications for Reigate and Banstead Council.
As Marketing and Communications Manager at Gloucester City Council I was a key member of the emergency planning team during the floods of 2007 which saw around 1,000 properties affected and where I also helped organise a visit by Her Majesty The Queen to the City.
I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and specialise in media management, internal and external communications, brand and reputation management, coaching and mentoring.
I am President of the Voice of Wales Speakers Club which is part of Toastmasters International
I live with my wife Maggie in South Wales where together we run Novus Coaching and Counselling
