Details

My book, The Tennis Champion Who Escaped The Nazis, is a family memoir based around my grandparents’ lives and, ultimately, their escape, along with my mother, to London from Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1939. It also explores the fate of those they left behind. The Tennis Champion Who Escaped the Nazis was Ysenda Maxstone-Graham’s Book of The Week in the Daily Mail, and I was interviewed on BBC Breakfast, BBC World Service/BBC Sounds. Between July 2023 and December 2025, I have given talks at 17 literary festivals in the UK, four libraries, the Austrian Embassy, with book signings at a variety of bookshops and book fairs. I was interviewed on BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Somerset, BBC Radio Gloucester, BBC Radio Devon and Cornwall, Radio Europe, and BBC World Service. I have been interviewed on podcasts such as BBC Sounds, and was interviewed by Museum of the Holocaust in New York City.

Most of my talks have been in the style of "in conversation with the author," which is what I prefer. I have also been on panels with other authors, speaking about subjects such as women in history, and 80 years since the Second World War. My areas of expertise include my book, how to write a memoir, and my career as a travel writer.

I am also a journalist who has covered subjects ranging from travel and food to history and fashion. Earlier in life, I studied for a foundation course at University of the Arts London followed by a degree in Illustration. It was by chance that I moved into journalism, when offered a job at Vogue magazine. This was followed by a period as deputy editor of a ski magazine. I have co-written 25 travel guidebooks with my husband, Peter Hardy.

As a travel writer, I have regularly contributed to a variety of publications including The Guardian, The Times and Sunday Times, The Telegraph, the Evening Standard, Condé Nast Traveller, Country Life, Tatler and British Airways High Life magazine. For 15 years, I edited and wrote much of the content for the website Welove2ski. I host and produce the podcast, Action Packed Travel, together with my husband.

I am currently writing a biography about a tech entrepreneur who has a fascinating family history. I am willing to travel abroad, as long as my expenses are covered.

The Tennis Champion Who Escaped the Nazis

In 1930, at the age of twenty-seven, Liesl Herbst was the Austrian National Tennis Champion, a celebrity in Vienna. Liesl, her husband David and their daughter Dorli came to Britain after escaping the Nazis. In London, though initially stripped of their Austrian passports and rendered stateless aliens, both Liesl and her daughter Dorli competed at Wimbledon. They remain the only mother and daughter ever to have played doubles together at Wimbledon. This moving story of escape and survival is told by Liesl’s grand-daughter, Dorli’s daughter. Some of the story, the author heard first-hand from her grandmother; the rest, she has meticulously researched over many years in four countries. It is as much a search for the author’s own identity as for her own children and grandchildren to ensure that their remarkable family history is never lost again. Illustrated throughout with family photographs and original documents, this is a story of survival against terrible odds, an inspiring tale of resilience and hope.
