Hello!
My name is Francesca Tyer. I am a Salisbury-based young adult author (The Elemental Prophesy series) and founder of the Untold Stories Academy, a business through which I run creative writing workshops (for children and adults) and offer editing and mentoring support to writers. I also work as a freelance content writer, copyeditor, and English tutor.
I have been running creative writing workshops in schools since 2018. I am passionate about child-centred learning and love inspiring children and young adults to unlock their imagination and develop their passion for the written word.
For whole day visits, I usually start with a morning assembly and Q&A, followed by class/year group workshops. I always offer a book signing at the end of the day.
Assemblies
During these interactive assemblies, I introduce children to myself and my books. I explain how and why I became an author and read a short extract, usually from my first novel, The Firestone (the series is suitable for readers aged 7+). Depending on the nature of the following workshops, I also sometimes read a poem.
Writing Workshops
I run a variety of workshops, from those that focus solely on a specific story writing skill such as setting or characterisation so those that build imaginative skills more broadly. I also run poetry workshops and offer career talks.
Example Workshop: Bringing Stories to Life
This workshop focuses on the power of imagination and fantasy worlds. Through a series of individual and group activities, I help children to bring their stories to life on the page. Activities often involve the use of props and fantastical images to prompt ideas.
All workshop content is adapted depending on age groups and may be developed collaboratively with the school to fit in with curriculum studies.

“Thank you so much for visiting us to run your workshops last week - I thought they were brilliantly planned and the prompts and props you brought with you were particularly engaging, and allowed students to approach their writing in new and interesting ways. One of our Year 9 students went straight to her English teacher after her session to say how much she had enjoyed it! We would be very keen to book to have you back again.” D. S., Librarian
